Third Grade is Great!

Mrs. Van Sluys' class has been having fun learning during Readers and Writers Workshop! The students loved decorating their Writer's Notebooks and are enjoying writing their own "seeds". They especially liked the assignment on "Where my feet have been this summer" where they were able to share about special experiences and memories from their summer vacation.  In reading workshop, the class has been learning about Fiction vs. Nonfiction, Reading Genres and many other topics.  They have also read many delightful read alouds to start the year and last week had an author study on Peter Reynolds.  On Friday, the whole third grade celebrated International Dot Day.  This is a day where students celebrate "Making their Mark", the power of trying new things even when they are hard, and "seeing where it takes you".   Here are few pictures from Readers Workshop, International Dot Day and a video clip of the The Dot song from youtube that the students had fun singing in class.

International Dot Day

Today third grade celebrated International Dot Day along with other classrooms all over the country. We read Peter H. Reynolds books throughout the week, got to know the author, and even learned the Dot Song!

We had a lot of fun learning the movements for the dot song.

Then, the third graders got to switch classes and make their own dots!

They really dove in and used their creativity to make a mark. Ask your kids to tell you about The Dot and the other fun books we read.

Welcome to Third Grade!

We are having a great year so far in third grade!  We have been busy learning all about what to expect this year.  The third graders have had two "Family Meetings" in the presentation area. This is where all of the third graders meet together to learn about important topics such as PBIS expectations, Line Basics, Give Me Five, Homework Coupons, Class Coupons, Prize box and discipline procedures.  We have also had fun in class getting to know each other in the classroom by doing a scavenger hunt, writing a classroom constitution and playing a Tootsie Roll lollipop game.  The teachers are enjoying getting to know our new students.  We are looking forward to the rest of the week and getting into the classroom routine while having Readers Workshop, Math, Social Studies and Writers Workshop.

Welcome Third Graders!

Has it only been two days of school? What a whirlwind! I have loved getting to know your children so far. They are bubbling with personality and lots of energy :)

Here are their first day of school pictures. I look forward to the adventure this school year will bring!
